Marriott Opens Its Flagship Hotel in Uganda

For travelers beginning or ending a private safari in Uganda, Kampala has a significant new address. The Kampala Marriott Hotel and Marriott Executive Apartments have officially opened in Nsambya, bringing Marriott’s flagship hotel brand to Uganda for the first time.

There is something exciting about arriving in Uganda. For many travelers, Entebbe is the first introduction: the warm air after leaving the aircraft, glimpses of Lake Victoria and the realization that the journey imagined for months has finally begun.

Beyond Entebbe lies Kampala, a capital built across hills, energetic and constantly changing. And its skyline has just gained a striking new landmark.

The Kampala Marriott Hotel and Marriott Executive Apartments Kampala have officially opened in Nsambya. The twin-tower development, linked by a skybridge, brings the flagship Marriott Hotels brand and Marriott Executive Apartments brand to Uganda for the first time.

Kampala Marriott Hotel has 181 rooms and suites, including a Presidential Suite. Rooms combine workspaces and high-speed connectivity with locally influenced design, while the elevated position provides views across Kampala’s famous hills and, from some rooms, partial views towards Lake Victoria.

The adjoining Marriott Executive Apartments Kampala adds 96 serviced apartments, ranging from studios to a three-bedroom penthouse. They include separate living, dining and sleeping areas, kitchens and dedicated workspaces.

Together, they create something Kampala has needed more of: premium accommodation capable of serving several very different kinds of international traveler.

That includes the leisure guest spending a night or two in Kampala, the executive adding a safari to a business trip, families wanting more residential space and travelers staying in Uganda for several weeks rather than several nights.

Why This Matters Before a Uganda Safari

There is a temptation when designing a safari to treat the city hotel as little more than a bed between an international flight and the “real” journey.

We disagree. The first 24 hours can influence how the next several days feel. A guest arriving after a long journey from New York, London, Los Angeles, Toronto, Tokyo, Perth, Mumbai or another gateway does not necessarily need to immediately begin another long journey by road.

Sometimes the most luxurious thing we can put into an itinerary is time to arrive properly. That might mean a quiet dinner, a full night’s sleep, an unhurried breakfast and a comfortable morning before continuing into Uganda.

Kampala Marriott gives us another option for doing exactly that. Its location in Nsambya puts guests within reach of central Kampala while offering the facilities expected of a full-service international hotel. The property has six restaurants and bars, a heated outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre, steam and sauna facilities and Saray Spa.

For a traveler coming off a long-haul flight—or returning dusty, exhilarated and perhaps slightly tired after days in the bush—those details matter.

And Then There Is Kampala

We would not automatically send every safari guest into Kampala. For some journeys, an Entebbe hotel remains the more logical choice, particularly when flight schedules and onward domestic connections make staying close to the international airport sensible.

But when the itinerary allows it, Kampala deserves more than being seen through a vehicle window. The Marriott is minutes from the city centre and provides access to some of Kampala’s important cultural and historical sites, including the Uganda Museum, Independence Monument and Kabaka’s Palace.

This opens the possibility of turning an arrival night into something more meaningful. Rather than land, sleep and leave, a guest could spend a little time discovering the city before the safari begins.

Kampala is where contemporary Uganda becomes visible: business and art, restaurants and markets, history and politics, old neighbourhoods and new towers all occupying the same energetic city. For travelers who want to understand the country beyond its wildlife, that context has value.

A Particularly Interesting Option for Marriott Bonvoy Travelers

For international travelers, the Marriott name requires little introduction. Marriott’s global network and Marriott Bonvoy loyalty programme mean that some Nandi Adventures guests will arrive in Uganda already familiar with the brand. That familiarity can be useful.

A safari through Uganda is deliberately full of contrasts. One night might be spent overlooking a rainforest before trekking mountain gorillas; another beside a channel filled with hippos and elephants; another in a lodge surrounded by the sounds of the African night.

Beginning or ending that journey with a recognizable international hotel can provide a comfortable transition. The objective is not to make Uganda feel like somewhere else. Quite the opposite. There is another part of this opening that is particularly interesting for travel advisors, companies and incentive planners. Kampala Marriott includes 1,293 square metres of event space across six venues. Its Kampala Grand Ballroom can accommodate up to 1,000 guests, supported by audiovisual facilities and event-planning services.

This significantly expands the city’s premium meetings and events inventory. It also creates interesting possibilities for combining a corporate meeting, conference or incentive programme in Kampala with a private extension into Uganda’s wilderness.

A conventional incentive trip might finish with dinner. A Ugandan one could continue with chimpanzees in Kibale, a private wildlife safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park or, for eligible travelers, a journey into Bwindi to encounter mountain gorillas. That is a very different reward.

Wellness Before—or After—the Wild

One of the quieter advantages of the new hotel is its wellness offering. Saray Spa, sauna and steam facilities, a fitness centre and heated outdoor pool give travelers an opportunity to reset around their safari.

That can be particularly welcome after an international journey. It can be equally welcome afterwards. A gorilla trek is exhilarating, but it is still a trek. Several days of safari can involve early mornings, dusty roads and a great deal of excitement.

There is nothing wrong with finishing the journey slowly. In fact, we often encourage it. A massage, dinner overlooking Kampala and one final night’s sleep before the flight home can be a much more graceful ending than racing directly from the wilderness to an international departure.

Six Places to Eat and Drink

Kampala Marriott has also put considerable emphasis on dining and social spaces.

The Woodshed Grill & Bar centres on open-flame cooking and premium cuts. Luna Cake Studio handles pastries and cakes, while Majlis Coffee Lounge provides coffee and lighter meals. Kasana Deck offers outdoor dining, and the property also includes Iron Taps Sports Bar and Tatu Rooftop Bar.

For us, Tatu may be particularly interesting for an arriving guest. There is something appropriate about beginning a Uganda journey above the city, looking across Kampala before heading towards forests, mountains and savannah. Tomorrow can be for gorillas. Tonight can simply be Kampala.

More Than Another International Hotel

The official inauguration on 27 August also carried a distinctly Ugandan story.

The property was developed by Ugandan businessman Ponsiano Ngabirano under the Capital Shoppers hospitality group, with Uganda’s National Social Security Fund (NSSF) among the investors. The NSSF is the national savings scheme for Ugandan workers. This kind of investment is important to tourism, employment and the wider economy.

That makes the opening more interesting than the arrival of another international flag. It represents the intersection of local investment and an international hospitality brand at a moment when Uganda is seeking to grow the value of its tourism industry.

For international travelers, the visible result is another premium hotel. For Uganda, the implications extend to employment, training, conferences, investment and the country’s ability to serve higher-value travelers.

For some travelers, Kampala Marriott will. We see particular potential for guests who want an international full-service hotel in Kampala, Marriott Bonvoy members, business travelers adding a private safari, families needing more space, corporate and incentive groups, and travelers who would like a slower beginning or end to their Uganda journey.

For other itineraries, staying in Entebbe may still make considerably more sense. That distinction matters. Luxury travel is not about automatically selecting the newest or most expensive property. It is about putting the right property in the right place in the journey.

Uganda’s greatest luxury will never be found inside a hotel. It is found in places where roads become narrower and cities disappear.
