Starting from mid-2025, all visitors to Tanzania will be required to pay mandatory travel insurance fee of USD 44 per person. This new policy, announced as part of Tanzania’s 2025/26 national budget, will be applied at the point of entry and is intended to provide basic emergency coverage during your stay. It applies to all foreign non-residents visiting mainland Tanzania.
This follows a similar policy already in effect in Zanzibar, which introduced mandatory travel insurance on 1 October 2024. Visitors to Zanzibar are currently required to purchase insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC), costing USD 44 per adult and USD 22 per child aged 3–17. Children under 3 years are exempt.
It’s not yet confirmed whether mainland Tanzania will also offer a child discount, so we advise families to budget for the full USD 44 per person for now.
What the Insurance Covers
The government-mandated insurance is designed to provide basic coverage, including:
- Emergency medical treatment
- Accidental injury care
- Repatriation and evacuation
- Compensation for lost or delayed luggage
- Assistance in unexpected events such as theft or personal loss
The policy is valid for up to 92 days and must be purchased regardless of whether you already have another form of travel insurance.
Why It Matters for Families and Groups
If you’re traveling as a family or in a group, the cost can add up quickly. A family of four, for example, would pay an additional USD 176 in insurance fees. However, the upside is that each traveler has access to basic emergency support while in the country.
Our Recommendation
At Nandi Adventures, we recommend that all travelers—especially those with families, pre-existing conditions, or adventure-focused itineraries—continue to purchase their preferred travel insurance from home, even if it overlaps with the mandatory Tanzanian policy.
Private travel insurance from your home country typically provides broader and more flexible coverage, including:
- Trip cancellations or delays
- Comprehensive baggage protection
- Adventure activity coverage
- 24/7 global assistance
- Flexibility for extended stays or multiple countries
Think of Tanzania’s required insurance as a baseline, and your own travel insurance as the comprehensive backup that travels with you.
What to Expect on Arrival
Details are still emerging, but travelers will likely need to:
- Purchase the mandatory insurance online before travel or at the point of entry
- Show proof of coverage (paper or digital) at immigration
- Pay the fee in USD or through approved payment channels
- Repeat the process separately for Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania if visiting both
We will continue to update our travelers as more details are confirmed closer to the implementation date.
